The famous play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, which takes place at Kronborg (Elsinore castle) in Helsingør around 1603, Shakespeare called Kronborg Castle "Elsinore Castle". Shakespeare never visited Denmark himself, but he knew Kronborg Castle through English actors who had performed there, and today the story is brought to life by Danish actors

The world-famous Prince Hamlet is a Danish prince in a play by William Shakespeare, written in 1603. The play is based on an old legend, and the stage for the play is Elsinore and has Kronborg Castle as a setting.

"Elsinore Castle" Kronborg is Hamlet's home and one of the world's great cultural and historical powerhouses, Recreated performing arts that not only preserves tradition, but revives and renews what Shakespeare is today.

Kronborg is surrounded by a huge defense system, which in its time did Kronborg to one of Northern Europe's strongest fortresses.

In recent years, large parts of the fortress complex have been recreated, so it can again be seen in its full extent.

Hamlet and Elsinore
On a dark winter night, a ghost walks the ramparts of  Elsinore Castle in Denmark, and was discovered first by a pair of watchmen, later by the scholar Horatio, the ghost resembles the recently dead King Hamlet, whose brother Claudius has inherited the throne and married the dead king’s widow, Queen Gertrude. 

When Horatio and the watchmen told Prince Hamlet, the son of Gertrude and the dead king, to see the ghost, the ghost speaks to him, declaring ominously that it is indeed his father’s spirit, and that he was murdered by none other than Claudius. Ordering Hamlet to seek revenge on the man who usurped his throne and married his wife, the ghost disappears with the dawn.
